Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay.

We are very pleased to bring you May issue of Knowledge Tree. Yet another academic year has gone by with the recently concluded end-semester examinations. We wish our graduating students a successful and fulfilling career.

Our Institute welcomed a number of distinguished visitors to the campus in April. Our guests included Mr. Raúl Diez Canseco Terry, former First Vice President of Peru and founder President of Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola in Lima, Peru. Mr. Diez Canseco expressed his desire of close cooperation between Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola and IIT Bombay. Prof. Meric Gertler, President of University of Toronto also visited the Institute and reviewed the cooperation between the two institutes. He and Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director, also agreed to further strengthen the academic and research cooperation.

April saw the IIT Bombay students continuing with the tradition of Hostel Cultural General Championships (Cult GCs) and the Performing Arts Festival. The first prize was bagged by Apratyaksh, presented by Hostels 1, 4, 9, 10, 14, and 16B. Apratyaksh revolved about the theme as how deception could be used for power. It narrated the story of a "Behroopiya" who lures an entire kingdom into believing his immaculate acting and his "Swaangs" and overthrows the king to ascend the throne. Along with this spectacular performance, PAF 2016 saw another splendid aerial act through Muntazir, wherein for the first time a street play was staged in PAF. Daira was the wonderful depiction of a girl’s dilemma over her sexuality while being pushed into a marriage. Please see the article below for more details.

The "Institute Valedictory Function" was celebrated on 28th April at Prof. B. Nag auditorium, VMCC. The Valedictory Function is rites of passage and welcomes the graduating students to the family of IIT alumni. Giving his welcome address, Prof. Devang Khakhar highlighted the importance of connecting with each other and with the Institute after graduation. Prof. D.B. Phatak delivered the valedictory address where he emphasized the difference between success in career and success in life as an important guiding philosophy. The standing-room only event was the “last orientation” of their IIT life for the students. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to some Student Alumni Relationship Cell (SARC) members for their outstanding contribution to the Institute. Several hundred graduating students also signed the “Give One” pledge during the function. More details are in the article on the function.

We are very pleased to bring Prof. Kannan Iyer, professor of Mechanical Engineering in this month’s Research in Focus. Prof. Kannan Iyer joined the Institute in 1986 and has nearly 40 years pf experience of teaching and research in academic and R&D organizations. Prof. Iyer is the Praj Industries Chair Professor of Energy Science and Engineering since 2012. His main areas of research are on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics and Safety, and Computational Fluid Dynamics and System Modelling. He serves in several national and international bodies including the advisory committee of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Government of India.

The anniversary of Tinkerers' Lab, established with support of class of 1975, was observed on 7th April with a number of talks and events. The day saw these alumni get together and brainstorm on the current status and scope for future development of the lab. Mr. Sameer Katdare of class of 1975 delivered an insightful lecture on "Engineering Lessons from a disaster - Bhopal” highlighting the important technical and management issues that contributed to the terrible disaster.

A series of lectures were organized this month by well-known speakers from fields that spanned from science, philosophy to linguistics.  Details of the lectures are also given below.

The generous contributions received from alumni, corporate entities and other friends of the institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
